    Why do people subtitle movies? A survey research of the subtitler motivations and practices

    In this paper we investigate the reasons why enthusiasts dedicate time and effort to create subtitles for third-party videos shared on-line. Based on results obtained from a survey research with a community of Brazilian subtitlers, we highlight basic features of these enthusiasts as well as their motivations and main objectives.     Investigating the collaborative process of subtitles creation and sharing for videos on the Web

    In this paper we concentrate on the study of the collaborative practices of enthusiasts that create and share subtitles for third party videos. Based on preliminary results from interviews with some volunteers, we formalize the subtitles creation and sharing process using a business process management model and compare it with other collaborative and crowdsourcing models. We expect that our initial observations can bring a new understanding of the process and, thus, help in the design of next generation video enriching tools

    Lawyers often need to look for previous similar legal cases when analysing new ones. The more previous cases, the more time is spent. Classical search engines execute termbased retrieval, which may miss relevant documents as well as fetch several irrelevant ones, causing lack of useful information and waste of time. Ideally, retrieval should be meaning-based. Humans beings are able to do e cient searches due to their knowledge. Therefore, semantic search requires knowledge. This paper presents a semantic search engine. Along the paper, several issues concerning specially knowledge representation and memory are discussed. A formalism based on models of comprehension is introduced, as well as its motivation. Examples of representation of sentences in natural language from the Legal Domain are provided. The search engine and its architecture, based on domain knowledge, are brie y commented.     Most of the search engines available over the Web are based on mathematical approaches | classical techniques in the Information Retrieval area. Thereby, they are suitable for the retrieval of documents containing some or all the terms of a query, though not to retrieve the documents containing the meaning those terms were intended to express. This paper presents some advantages obtained from query expansion with WordNet and noise treatment with knowledge on top of Paraconsistent Logic. Both methods are semantically driven, allowing the retrieval of documents which do not contain any term of the original query. Noise treatment results from the combination of a smooth term comparison with knowledge about term authentication based on behaviors of features in the collection. Although query expansion recurs for every query, noise treatment is part of the indexing mechanism, causing no overhead in queries.     O estudo busca descrever as perdas de água e solo na bacia experimental de São João do Cariri, localizada entre as coordenadas 7º 22’ de latitude Sul e 36º 31’ de longitude Oeste, no semiárido da Paraíba, Brasil. Os dados de lâmina escoada e produção de sedimentos foram obtidos em duas parcelas de erosão de 100 m² com cobertura superficial diferenciadas, sendo uma desmatada e outra com cobertura de vegetação rasteira num período de três anos e depois mantida desmatada, no período de 1999 a 2006. Os resultados obtidos mostraram que a erosão média na Parcela 1 foi 3,4 t/ha, enquanto que na Parcela 2 foi de 0,4 t/ha, mostrando a influência da cobertura vegetal sobre o processo erosivo no semiárido.     Adipose Tissue-Derived Stem Cells and the Importance of Animal Model Standardization for Pre-Clinical Trials

    ABSTRACTStem cells are undifferentiated cells and can self-renew and differentiate into various cell types, besides having immuno-modulating properties and paracrine effects in response to tissue injury, and may therefore treat injuries and diseases or even replace damaged or lost cells. Adipose tissue is an attractive source of adult stem cells, since the human body has a large reserve that is obtained in large amounts by minimally invasive methods. Interest in these cells has been increasing steadily due to their properties and possible applications in regenerative medicine and cell therapy. A large part of these investigations are focused on cardiovascular diseases, which are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Although in recent years treatments have advanced in cardiology, the development of new therapies to recover the damaged tissue still remains one of the main goals of cardiac research. However, to achieve effective results, in vivo and in vitro animal models for preclinical studies and consequently for application in humans must be standardized. The development of preclinical models in large animals requires the use of well-characterized animal cell lines, similar to human cells, and the use of the porcine model represents a great advantage for preclinical translational research

    Rainfall Prediction in the State of Paraíba, Northeastern Brazil Using Generalized Additive Models

    The state of Paraíba is part of the semi-arid region of Brazil, where severe droughts have occurred in recent years, resulting in significant socio-economic losses associated with climate variability. Thus, understanding to what extent precipitation can be influenced by sea surface temperature (SST) patterns in the tropical region can help, along with a monitoring system, to set up an early warning system, the first pillar in drought management. In this study, Generalized Additive Models for Location, Scale and Shape (GAMLSS) were used to filter climatic indices with higher predictive efficiency and, as a result, to perform rainfall predictions. The results show the persistent influence of tropical SST patterns in Paraíba rainfall, the tropical Atlantic Ocean impacting the rainfall distribution more effectively than the tropical Pacific Ocean. The GAMLSS model showed predictive capability during summer and southern autumn in Paraíba, highlighting the JFM (January, February and March), FMA (February, March and April), MAM (March, April and May), and AMJ (April, May and June) trimesters as those with the highest predictive potential. The methodology demonstrates the ability to be integrated with regional forecasting models (ensemble). Such information has the potential to inform decisions in multiple sectors, such as agriculture and water resources, aiming at the sustainable management of water resources and resilience to climate risk
